I'm hoping to discover how lawyers get paid. Not so much the mechanics of the payment but, essentially, which is the more financially rewarding, a guilty plea or a trial? To be precise, assume an offence that would result in a crown court appearance, regardless of plea. Time is money, so for a given unit of time, which would give the best returns for the time involved, a guilty plea or a trial. Would legal aid make a difference?

Thanks for that. Now I know you hate me. My brain hurts! 🤣 To b honest, I was hoping for something a little easier to absorb. A sort of cost benefit analysis between a NG trial and a guilty plea.
It is a long time since I was involved in criminal work, and there are not many left.
The whole thing is analysed intensely by the Legal Aid Agency.
It will not be a simple answer, but broadly, the payments are per case, so that a quickly sorted case pays better than one on which the fee earner spends any real time. This applies (from distant memory) to short trials also. It was only when a trial became longer that additional fees could be earned.
It is enough, I think, to say that it is a bare bones approach.
